More of a novella really. It is a quaint read in the mindset of an innocent 9 year old. I can see why he wrote it like that, the boy's innocence highlights the atrocities of auschwitz and makes the twist at the end all the more shocking. It is important that young kids read about this and I applaud the author's ability to show this t young children in a way they can truly understand. I may have done this book a disservice in that it's one of several WWII novels I've read this year, and I finished it while horrifically hungover. I should have loved it and I should have been moved by the ending, but instead I was left cold. By the end, Bruno was really starting to irritate me so it was hard to feel sympathetic in the way the book was resolved - despite the fact that clearly it was HORRIBLE and is the type of thing that would normally have me in floods of tears!
