This book was written in 1979, but it doesn't feel that way. I loved every minute. I've said and heard other people say what they would do if they were able to go back in time as a POC, and after reading this I have to say that we don't know what the hell we're talking about.

The things our ancestors had to endure is mindboggling and atrocious. There were moments when Octavia described a whipping, someone being put in chains, ect... that I found tears in my eyes.

I'm not even sure how to classify this book. It is fantasy with one foot in contemporary(ish) America and one foot in the past. A black protagonist, Dana is somehow repeatedly drawn into the past -- into the deep South and the world of white owned plantations and slavery.

It's not an easy book to read as far as the subject goes. There are graphic passages of physical and sexual violence. There are some tough truths to face and many unanswered questions. It's a book that will stick with me for so ...more
