Edana (Dana) Franklin | Kevin

This book was written in 1979, but it doesn't feel that way. I loved every minute. I've said and heard other people say what they would do if they were able to go back in time as a POC, and after reading this I have to say that we don't know what the hell we're talking about.

The things our ancestors had to endure is mindboggling and atrocious. There were moments when Octavia described a whipping, someone being put in chains, ect... that I found tears in my eyes.

I have been a little intimidated to read more Octavia Butler since I read Dawn in a feminist sci-fi class in college. Her stories seemed to go a little over my head even though I enjoyed them. After reading Kindred, I wonder why I waited so long. Though this story is incredibly hard to read with Dana’s account of taking the role of an enslaved person, and witnessing atrocities done to others, I felt like I flew through it with the ease of Butler’s writing style.
