Here's a fun little read for the geek in all of us: The death rate for junior officers and crewmen on board Universal Union Starship Intrepid is through the roof, but no one (except the junior officers who develop complex methods of avoiding away missions) seems to notice, least of all the captain and senior officers. This was such a fun book. John Scalzi is an absolutely fantastic writer and I've loved reading this. As a Trekkie, obviously I was drawn in by the premise of self-aware Redshirts, but this was laugh-out-loud (at my desk at work) brilliant. Scalzi's humour and wit is exactly right (and if you do decide to listen to the audio book, Wil Wheaton is the perfect narrator to express it). I also enjoyed how this book trolled me and how meta it became towards the end. Brilliant.

The audiobook really did make me laugh out loud so bravo Wil Wheaton on the reading. As far as the story, I'm glad I read/listened since there were so many funny parts. It just made my brain hurt a bit as so often happens when time travel, parallel universes, etc. are part of a story. ;) ...more
