This gets my vote for best novel of 2014 so far. I spent last week in agony - dying to read so I could be with these characters, and trying to hold off so I could enjoy the story longer.
Set In WW2, the novel follows Werner and Marie-Laure as their lives are changed forever. There are so things to discuss in the novel: I could talk about Jules Verne, or the boulangerie, or Werner's sister Julia, or Frederick and his birds. Amazing. Lyrical language, compelling plot -- Doerr focuses on the human in World War II rather than just the war itself. Marie-Laure, the blind girl, is a masterpiece. Werner is a beautifully-conceived foil. Highly recommended: you won't want to put it down, & you won't want it to end!

I guess I am in the minority here. I'm not sure why but the book just didnt hold my attention. Perhaps too much going on at once.

What should have been choppy and hard to follow with short chapters, alternating POVs and time hops somehow became this rich, engaging read that I couldn't put down. It was a great look into a harrowing and terrible time in history, with a real personal focus.
