This was a fun read. Two seemingly separate events with supernatural creatures winding up in NYC at the turn of the century make for a page turner from beginning to end. The author's descriptions of early 20th century NYC and her characterizations of the people that live there are spot on. I enjoyed learning some historical facts about the mythical creatures known as Jinni (Genies) and Golems, and interesting tidbits about the city, such as the Angel statue in Central Park and the diverse commun

3.5 stars. A review compared it to Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, but The Golem and the Jinni didn't have the other book's charm. Maybe I would have liked this one better if I wasn't expecting more from it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Set in NYC at the turn of the last century, it's a immigrant tale of two magical creatures in human form, on their own and trying to figure out their identities and manage their true natures in a society that would try to destroy them if they were discovered. The people they meet and the societies they find themselves in are absorbing. I loved the characters and the world around them. I was sad to finish this one.
