I had heard so much background info on Capote and how he became part of the story he was writing, I wasn't sure I would enjoy the book. I was happily surprised to find that Capote is a very good writer! He is descriptive without being bloodthirsty, informative without being boring, and knows how to present the different aspects of the story so that the reader is pulled into it, wanting to know more.

This was a very well-written book! That probably wouldn't have surprised most people but it sure as heck surprised me. Although the beginning was a little slow, the buildup was perfectly orchestrated and there were even a couple of surprising twists. The author did such a great job at giving us the background of the killers (especially Perry) that I felt actual sympathy; forgetting what heinous acts they would later commit.

If you've never read any true crime, this is probably *the* book to get you started. However, if you've seen Capote, Infamous, or any version of In Cold Blood, you already know the story. As crime stories go, it's compelling and Capote captures intimate details and spills them across the page as if they were just sitting there in plain sight anyway. The most amazing thing about this story is how much Capote worked to make it seem effortless.
