Disappointing. I first read an excerpt of "The Graveyard Book" as one of the short stories in "M is for Magic", a collection of Gaiman's short stories (4 stars, see review). And, that's just the problem: each chapter of "Graveyard" seems like a short story in itself, well written and no doubt imaginative, but in the context of a novel, only loosely connected to the chapters before and after it. I am really learning to love Neil Gaiman. Although this book was written for the Young Adult set, I found it very intriguing and well written. Neil constantly amazes me with his creativity and imagination.

This book was set in a graveyard (obviously) but there is little darkness or sadness about it. It really is just a story about a boy who escapes the death that claimed his family and finds a new family that works together to prepare him for the world "out there".

Read this for "Spooky Season", and I really enjoyed it. It's a fun, enjoyable book about a young man raised by ghosts. It includes a mystery, a bit of romance, adventure, and an interesting story line. Despite that it's geared for young audiences, it's enjoyable for most anyone. ...more
