It was amazing and moving to read about this man's faith in God, perseverance in trials, and his occasional failures to live up to his ideal. Beautifully written--his sentences and vocabulary were amazing--it reads more like an adventure, and one cringes to think that it is actually true. 'For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning'.

4.5 rating. I really loved the writing style, rather poetic and a lot of old language. It made the book a beautiful read, in the midst of a very hard and sad topic. I love history and reading true accounts of historical events, so I loved this book. One thing I would have been interested in was to hear more about some of the other slaves' lives, those who shared part of Northup's experience.
