What Members Thought
The unbelievable, terrifying drama upon which Melville based Moby Dick. I read this book in 2 days because I couldn't believe what I was reading and that it was ALL TRUE! I am enamored with the eloquence, the detailed research and the fast pace of the narrative so you can barely catch your breath. This book is being turned into a movie and I am really worried that there is no possible way it can possibly hold a candle to Philbrick's stellar writing.

This is the story of the Whaleship Essex and it’s the story upon which Moby Dick was loosely based. The author describes the rise of the whaling industry in America from its start on Nantucket Island. His descriptions of whaling are fascinating and very detailed, and when we get to the part about the rogue sperm whale ramming the ship things get ugly. The majority of the book is a tale of survival of men in three small whaleboats in the open ocean. I was taken especially by the different styles
