This is a semi-autobiographical novel about Junior, a teenage boy living on a Spokane Indian reservation in Washington, USA. He experiences many of the problems many teenage boys do, but his story is overlaid with the cultural context of being Native American, and choosing to move to a school outside of the reservation.

I've never read anything about indigenous peoples, so I found the context to this story really interesting. Junior talks about the poverty of his people as well as the high rates

If there is any book that made me feel all the feels it was this book. It was amazing it made me laugh it made me cry and Junior was one of the most unique protagonist I'd ever read about in my life. The story was heartbreaking and it was got wrenching but at the same time filled you up with so much hope that I don't think I've ever felt like this about a book it definitely deserved the national book award end six out of five stars. Some readers have questioned whether this should be considered YA lit or not, due to the sometimes heavy subject matter, but I think it is appropriately categorized.

While it is heavy, dealing with poverty, racism, addiction, violence, and death, it also feels very true.

I read this in one day, so I obviously was intrigued by Junior and his story. Interesting storyline and characters!

This is an excellent coming of age story. I read the 10th anniversary edition, which has a few bonuses, including the original draft of Chapter 1, an excerpt from the unpublished sequel, and others.
