Himes at his best. He writes about Harlem, and crime and cops and swindlers, people on the edge on both sides of the law. The star cops, Gravedigger and Coffin Ed, are definitely on both sides of the law, because that's the only way to keep order in these stories. Himes may write the fastest great action scenes in the history of crime fiction, yet his ability to describe the city from which he was exiled is also nonpareil.
