I've not read many of the "classics" so I tend to avoid each one, feeling slightly intimidated that the language will be too intellectual; that I'll be bored and then feel annoyed for not being smart enough to enjoy it.
The fact that this book is only 120 pages persuaded me to give it a try, but I really didn't expect to love it so much, let alone to find myself in a café trying to hide the tears that were streaming down my face!

This is one of my all time favorites - I really think it is the first book I read where I was truly shocked. It is fun to get to talk about with students.
Not really what I was expecting at all. Not to say I won't try reading this again one day, but I didn't find it particularly enjoying at this time in my life.

rubbish. I dont get the bloody hype about steinbeck. I will never read anything of his again.
I read this in an afternoon, which will probably make my high school teacher friends upset.
