There was a lot to like about this book, but by the end I grew weary of all of the angst and wasted opportunities. It did really open my eyes to the ways the Chinese faced such discrimination. I am of a similar age that Nate would be, and while my community was not extremely diverse, it was more diverse than "Middlewood." For the most part it was easy to follow the time shifting, but a couple of times toward the end, I thought it was a bit confusing.

I gave this book really three and a half stars. I'm not quite sure how I feel about it. The author did some things really well. Some of the descriptions were phrased just perfectly. it took me awhile to get into the book but once I hit the last hundred pages things went very quickly and I did not want to put the book down. Occasionally it felt repetitive but it also made me think about how we examine or don't examine our own lives.

This is Celeste Ng's first novel, and it is wonderful. She writes so movingly about a family crisis, and the family dynamics that led up to it. The whole family is full of real people--who make mistakes, who try too hard, and who internalize too much. After reading two of Ng's books, I anxiously await another one.

I thought this was a well written story of a family struggling with a loss. But the loss extends beyond (spoiler alert) the loss of a child, but deals with the loss of a family and the children's extreme efforts to reach beyond the confines and expectations set by the parents.
