Meh. Daughter dies. Family grieves. Family does what families do when grief strikes - they hurt each other. In addition, the third-person omniscient drove me a little batty because it jumped around a lot. The narrative goes back and forth from the time Lydia disappears (the opening line is "Lydia is dead.") and the time leading up to her disappearance. Father whines. Mother caves. Brother yells. The little sister was finally emerging as an interesting character about the time the book ended.

I finished this book, and basically...

Yeah.
This is an excellent book, but it is extremely emotionally taxing.
Everything I Never Told You is the story of a family recovering from a tragic loss. It moves back and forth in time, so that you can experience what led up to the tragedy, and fall through the canyons of grief alongside them afterwards.
One day, Lydia walked to the lake next to the family house. She unmoored the rowboat from the dock and rowed out into the center. She vanished.

There was a lot to like about this book, but by the end I grew weary of all of the angst and wasted opportunities. It did really open my eyes to the ways the Chinese faced such discrimination. I am of a similar age that Nate would be, and while my community was not extremely diverse, it was more diverse than "Middlewood." For the most part it was easy to follow the time shifting, but a couple of times toward the end, I thought it was a bit confusing.

I avoided this one. As a parent of teenagers, who lives in an area where mental health issues for teens are a regular conversation, I was worried this one would hit close to home. And it did, but more than that, it was just so depressing.
I can appreciate that Ng wanted to really explore the concept of "otherness", and what happens when parents have different goals for their children. (Dad wants Lydia to get along socially, Mom wants her to excel and have the career she didn't). But did we also ...more

Great start to a novel....I just wanted more information and didn't get it. Good characters with a unique point of view in the 1970s. Liked it but didn't love it.

I thought this was a well written story of a family struggling with a loss. But the loss extends beyond (spoiler alert) the loss of a child, but deals with the loss of a family and the children's extreme efforts to reach beyond the confines and expectations set by the parents.
