I am slowly filling in the gaps in my literary knowledge, but in cases like this author's, I also slow down, because each book is a punch in the stomach. A beautiful novel, if you survive the story.

Piano piano sto colmando le mie lacune letterarie, ma nei casi come quelli di questa autrice, rallento anche, perché ogni romanzo é un pugno nello stomaco. Bellissimo libro, se uno sopravvive alla storia.

I do like Toni Morrison, but this is not one of my favorites. The writing is wonderful, evocative, and lyrical. The story is true and heartbreaking. But, I found I did not connect with the characters. They seemed to be examples or types and not really fully rounded characters. The writing was also didactic in tone. Please, show me through the characters and events, don't tell me your message. It felt at times as though I was being hit over the head with themes and messages. I am glad I read this ...more
