The books of this series are now available free for Audible-UK-Plus members. They are read by Timothy West. I don’t hesitate a second in giving his narration five stars. He reads at the perfect speed. His intonations cannot be improved upon. Perfect pacing enhances the humor. West’s narration is the tantalizing, mouthwatering icing on a delicious cake! There is a Great House at Allington, occupied by Squire Dale, a bachelor lord, and there is a Small House at Allington, that he has given to the use of his brother’s widow and her two girls. I very much like Squire Dale, who tries to do well and be fair to everyone and gets too little credit for it, particularly from those for whom he has so provided. I had become accustomed to automatically giving Anthony Trollope a five-star rating, but this one just didn't sit well for me. There were times I wanted to scold Lilly for being a whiny bitch and the person I was rooting for throughout the length of this long novel just gets dumped by Trollope before the last chapter. 3.5 stars. I expect this one will stand as the Dud of the series. Not in regards to the writing: that was delightful, as always. However, the romances were over-the-top obnoxious, even by the usual Trollope standards, and every single person here was a complete dolt, apart from Lord de Guest and a few others. A tale full of idiots is all very well and funny (and, again, very Trollopian), but give us at least one endearing idiot to root for. The fellow we were meant to root for was most unsatisfa ...more
