Concise Summary:
The book is difficult. Words such as immoral sophistry and highbrow drivel come to mind.

The last part induced me to raise the rating from one to two stars. In this part Lawrence Durrell switches from excessive philosophizing to a resolution to the "characters" egotistical behavior. Things actually happen; we see what these people have brought down on themselves. In fact there ARE some wonderful descriptions.

There is no humor.

A re-read, I'll give another trial on this book.

I am not so sure if I'll read the Alexandria Quartet but at least I'll change my rating of this book for 3 stars.

This is a collection of detailed, not-always-consecutive vignettes of the narrator’s time in Alexandra. While not comprised of many pages, it is not a quick read especially if the reader wants to appreciate Durrell’s choice of words.
