I would have rated this a 5 if some more of it had been edited out. However, Blackmore wrote a very engaging, very witty coming of age story about a farmer John Ridd. It is set during the time of the Monmouth Rebellion and there are issues on government, Court and Kings, as well as hilarious ones on class, women, and love. I enjoy historical fiction. One of my favorite books is The Pillars of the Earth, which started my travels through England and Europe of the Middle Ages. But, until now I have never read a historical classic book which was historical fiction at the time written.
