A wonderful fusion - finding a suitable boy for Lata, post-independence Indian struggle such as Zamindari abolition act and lives of people affected by it, dissension in Congress party (with facts and real people!), insights into human psychology (tons of it), religious customs such as kumbh mela, Ramlila, Ramadan, Bakr-Id and so many other rituals, (in)famous couplets of Chatterjis.

A historical novel comprising 1500 pages (around 2790 for my ebook) is enticing for a reader and lover of historical fiction. The fact that it explores a region and period so critical to my own sense of history and identity made it even more appealing. So for a book of this scale to cover just 1 year (1951) almost feels like a wasted effort, sort of 'much ado about nothing'.
