A wonderful fusion - finding a suitable boy for Lata, post-independence Indian struggle such as Zamindari abolition act and lives of people affected by it, dissension in Congress party (with facts and real people!), insights into human psychology (tons of it), religious customs such as kumbh mela, Ramlila, Ramadan, Bakr-Id and so many other rituals, (in)famous couplets of Chatterjis.

This book was very good. I keep comparing it to War and Peace (which is about 100 pages shorter than A Suitable Boy). War and Peace was a great story; A Suitable Boy was good, but had several spots that downright dragged.
A Suitable Boy took place during one year in the life of a fairly new, independent India. At the core it is the story of a widow and her family trying to find A Suitable Boy for the youngest daughter, but the outer layers of this story included so much more. Politics, religion, ...more

The length of the book was what prevented me from starting it to begin with, but once started I was hooked and there was no way I was going to stop. Another reason I read this book was that I learned a sequel to it was supposed to be published this year. Unfortunately, it the novel won't be out until 2015. I look forward to it whenever it's published.
