I thought the story being told of Ultima and Antonio was good. I believe that the curandera role is still important in New Mexico. The land and the people’s relationship with it is described beautifully. But the people did not come off as well. The children seemed older than 7-9 and many of people (especially Horse, Bones, and the mother) seemed to be caricatures. I could have put up with that but the overall tone gave me the feeling that I was being spoken down to and that ruined my enjoyment.

I liked this book better than I thought I would, though not as much as I had hoped. The author does a wonderful job of capturing life in New Mexico during World War II. Parts of the book just sing, parts are very dark and parts were just plain dull for me. I'm Jewish so the many, long passages about Catholicism and religion were a bit ponderous and opaque.
