I simply found the author's style boring. The story had no real anchor, the characters were simply drifting with no purpose. Irritatingly male-centric viewpoints, the women are trivialized, under developed, shadows of people.
About weakness of character, dressed up as a story about love, hate, racial tensions, sexual immaturity, and loneliness, but strangely primarily as it applies to men. The women in the story, who could have had more compelling inner lives, were ignored almost completely.
