I have finally read one of James Baldwin's novels. Imagine my surprise that in spite of its very contemporary (to 2023) feel, it was more soap opera than social commentary. I expected something heavier, more profound, and there were problems that I did not anticipate, like the poor development of the women characters. I am looking forward now to reading Giovanni's Room since aside from his initial main character, Rufus, it is Another Country's white, gay character, Eric, who is the most layered.

Emotionally provocative novel, populated with intense characters. This must have been quite a risk for Baldwin to publish at its time (1960) as much of it deals with homosexuality and interracial relationships. At any rate he did an excellent job with it. It's an easy read filled with poetic turns of phrase and astonishing insights into various forms of love and friendship. He could probably have dropped a scene or two here and there to make the book flow even more effectively, but otherwise the
