Victor Hugo must have been one of those authors who got paid by the word because this book is much longer than it needed to be. Sometimes that was fine, this is so well written I don’t care if it goes on forever, other times were more like oh my god this better have a point. Spoiler: it usually doesn’t.

I read an abridged version of this book in high school, but decided right after New Year’s that I would tackle the real thing. I will admit, I struggled at times following some of the intricate details. It didn’t help that I mostly listened to a poorly done audio version. None the less, I fell in love with the story by the end and came to appreciate all the beautiful depth of Hugo’s writing. I plan to do a re read of a different version, and a more in depth study, in the not too distant future!
