Rating 3.5. I've had this book on my shelf for years so when I saw it's a book of the month for one of my book clubs, I eagerly picked it up. But instead of finding beautiful prose and interesting twists, the stories seemed just straight forward, slice of life tales. Some are somewhat upbeat but many have a sad tone. The prose is clear and spare, but not spectacular.
