I am so sorry to say I was not impressed by this novel. I wanted to like it, I expected to. After all, one of my favorite books of all time is about a wizard, and a world that doesn’t exist but is well constructed is another appealing element...I was a fan of Middle Earth before it became a blockbuster movie. Try as I might, though, I could not muster a single drop of concern or caring for Ged or anyone else in his world.

I really wanted to like this, and I was expecting to, but it didn't really grip me. You know how writers are always told to "show, don't tell"? This book was mostly telling. It was like an outline of a big epic story that could have had extra characters and subplots added. Some parts were really good and interesting, but in between the story dragged and felt rushed at the same time. The main character is a jerk for most of the story, so it was hard to care what happened to him.

I didn't particularly care for Eragon (I don't think I finished it), so I can't say that was much of a plus. It actually felt a little drab to me. I like my fantasy lands a little more lively.
But then...dragons. I do love my dragons. So yay for that. Still, they didn't play a large role, and that was disappointing. I think the lesson, tho ...more
