In an update that I made earlier this week in this book, I mentioned that this book was set in WII. I was wrong (sorry, it has been several years since I last read this book). I believe it was set in an Iron Curtain country, north of Salonika (possibly Bulgaria)

Dramatisation of the novel by Anne Holm about a boy who flees a Stalinist concertration camp, embarking on many adventures on his jouney to Denmark.

We need some tissues around in order to read this book. The theme reminds me The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, both quite touching books.
