Shirley Jackson is a master of twisted horror, not gory in any way, but deeply disturbing on a primal level. As with many Jackson works, it feels like a forgotten folktale or an unsettling children's story that is strangely and inappropriately heartwarming. I've wanted to read this for years and finally got the opportunity and it's one I'll probably read again. ...more

This was a suspenseful story that had me creeped out at times. Jackson did a wonderful job of making me wonder throughout if Mary Katherine (Merricat) was or was not an unreliable narrator. I was pretty sure I knew who had committed the crime, but it wasn't until the very end that Jackson verifies the reader's suspicions. Great psychological thriller. ...more
