I finally read this at the behest of my coworker so we could discuss it. It was kooky and just got more and more bizarre as the book went on.
We know from the beginning that everyone in the Blackwood family, except Mary Katherine “Merricat” and her older sister Constance, were poisoned to death but we don’t know who did it. Meericat, Constance and their elderly uncle are left to live in their family home but have been completely shunned by their community. Told from Merricat’s perspective, we fo ...more

I read this book as the first in a book club I just joined. I love that it was a book I never would have picked myself. I had never even heard of Shirley Jackson.

This one was short and creepy and fun. It’s the first I’ve read Shirley Jackson since “The Lottery” was assigned back in middle school, but I really dug it. I especially dig the narrator, Mary Kate (or Merricat) – she was just the right kind of eccentric to make the story a somewhat-sinister delight.
Really considering grabbing a copy of The Haunting of Hill House if I keep up with reading again and get through my backlog.

Intriguing. Eerie. Dark. Weird.
When Cousin Charles shows up, it gets better. This is one of the best I've read in some time. ...more
