Wow. This was my first foray into Russian literature, and also well-worth the (short) journey. In this eminently readable and thoroughly engrossing story, Solzhenitsyn exposes the brutality of the Russian Gulag and the unfortunate outcomes of the collectivization that spanned Russia in the era of Stalin. This novel was straightforward and very profound. I loved the way that Ivan conveyed his emotions and opinion about the world around him. The impossibility of survival in his environment is met with his practicality and logical mind who sees opportunity and even happiness in a freezing and oppressive prison.
