I think that anyone can read the first chapter of "Moby Dick" and understand instantly why it is beloved and honored. It opens strong and with a clear, refined poetry that is hard to match. But only a few people should read the rest of that book--it is long, and though filled with astonishing beauty, sighting that beauty is akin to the view you might enjoy for twenty minutes after a day of hiking, having surpassed the pain in your legs, the gnats, the muggy air, even somehow come to love all the ...more
