I have considered reading this book for years. In 2007 Doris Lessing received the Nobel Prize for Literature for this book, forty-five years after publication! It was a book ahead of its time. The telling switches between different threads, stories and notebooks and also back and forth in time; I thought this would be confusing. It proved not to be! My hesitation was unfounded. This novel is dense, complex and complicated and yet it was never a chore. The writing is beautiful, warm, real and I will certainly read another Lessing novel soon. This was a book that I wish I had read rather than listened to though as I think it would have bee easier to keep all the loose threads together in my mind.

This book written by Doris Lessing (awarded of the 2007 Nobel Prize in Literature) contains powerful anti-war and anti-Stalinist messages, an extended analysis of communism and the Communist Party in England from the 1930s to the 1950s, and an examination of the budding sexual and women's liberation movements.
