Loved this...great fun. 4.5-stars, rounded down.

As I read Lady Audley's Secret, I kept thinking of Poe, Conan Doyle and Anne Bronte. A nice combination, if I must say so myself. Braddon has created an interesting story line and a creepy environment in which to plunk down her motley set of characters. I loved the conflicting ideas that are present within Lady Audley herself and especially enjoyed the myriad ways she is viewed by the other characters in the story. Her secret did surprise me, and

Apparently, what I always called Feuilleton would actually have another name and that is Sensation Novel. That said, the novel is just fine, and even though it always walks the edge between the ridiculous and the absurd, it manages in a rare balancing act to "run with the hares and hunt with the hounds" and bring home an egregious result in terms of both story and pacing. I truly enjoyed every moment in this book: the nature descriptions, characters' inner talks, interactions, and of course, the wonderful ending, which brought tears to my eyes! The narration was superb. I shall listen to this 19th century classic yet again! ...more
