The first half of this novel is Willa Cather in her element. She knows the plains and its people, and as long as Claude was on the farm and in his small town, I found each word true and compelling. The second half of the novel, which takes place in France during WWI, does not ring as true and loses its grip on the characters somewhat. I read the 'plains' stories when I was way too young, 12-14 or so. I never thought about Cather again; until I started rereading the plains novels and finding them wonderful a decade or so again. Those strong women, you know? The, would you believe it, I learned she'd written other things, that seem to be mostly forgotten today.
