Lamb in His Bosom is Caroline Miller’s Pulitzer prize-winning novel centered on poor farmers in the pre-Civil War South. My reaction to this novel was visceral. I am proud to say that my own heritage is rooted in just such rural people and that I could indeed see traces of my own great-uncles, grandmother and grandfather in the characters of the hard-working men and women portrayed here. Lamb in His Bosom won the Pulitzer in 1934, and much like some of the other winners of the time it explores the plight of the poor which is almost always a theme that I love. This book was no exception.
The events are told from the POV of the poor farmers in the South, beginning pre-Civil War. These are not slave owners. They are the people who were barely surviving. One of my favorite books read in 2024. I'm still working on writing a review worthy of this southern Pulitzer Prize winner. The story and the characters are still with me, a year after starting it.
