Questo libro mi ha un po' deluso, sia perchè sente il peso degli anni in termini di traduzione (la mia è del 1974) sia perchè i personaggi - l'investigatore privato alcolista, ma con una morale, il riccone con due figlie viziose implicate in storie di ricatti, etc.- sembrano tutte delle macchiette, anche se poi diventeranno stereotipi classici nei noir.

A true American classic, in the way that Americans love to romanticize the world and look back on a history that doesn't exist and is wafer thin.
The story is enjoyable, but the best part is the classic Noir, LA atmosphere. The characters are caricatures in the best possible way. Don't expect much depth to any of them, it's a lot of pithy lines and hollywood fast talk. But then, that's why you're reading this: for a larger than life grimy underbelly of a society that wears it front and centre.
