Jeeter Caldwell and his family have always been poor, and when the Great Depression hit they are the poor sharecroppers in the south who found themselves starving to death. In this book we Mr Caldwell exposes us to the racism and classism of the day. The book is tragic and sad, and yet it is also filled with humor. Non avevo mai letto niente di Caldwell e quando è uscito il g.d.l. ne ho approfittato, ma nonostante le parole di elogio di Lansdale sul libro in particolare e sull'autore in generale, devo ammettere che non è proprio il mio genere. L'esaltazione delle miserie umane attraverso l'ironia non mi fa impazzire, tutto il tempo avevo questa sensazione di angoscia pesante che probabilmente non mi ha permesso di apprezzare il libro quale egregio rappresentante del suo tempo. This novel describes the Great Depression and its effects on a family, the Lesters, a destitute family living in Appalachia. Written and published in 1932 it is a no holds barred look at poverty. It is a gritty read of a family driven to desperation.
