This is a book of historical fiction. It is about the only black king of the western hemisphere, Henri Christophe. He reigned over Haiti from 1811 to 1820. He began as a slave, yet his rule came to mirror the brutality of the white rulers before him.

The country's historical and cultural roots are vividly drawn. Voodoo and belief in the supernatural are an integral part of people's lives and their culture. I have difficulty comprehending and immersing myself in this. The orgies of violence are f ...more

Although this book is well-written, simple and sparse in style, and is full of interesting history, I just didn't connect with it. I found myself looking up many of the people and events because it was all new to me. I probably leaned heavily toward a three star rating except for the fact that it brought so much knowledge into my life. So I bumped it up to four.
