What an unusual and interesting book this turned out to be. It is a mystery, in which three school girls and a governess from the Appleyard College disappear during a school picnic outing; but, in actuality, it is more a study of the school and the repressive headmistress, Miss Appleyard, for whom the school is named.

As a child, I was mesmerized by Peter Weir's eerie 1975 film of the same name. I had no idea that the scenes that had haunted me for 50 years were based on a classic of Australian literature until just recently, and I immediately added it to my bookshelf.
