It was an interesting story, but overall it feels unfinished and underdeveloped. I think it suffered most from a complete lack of pacing, especially in terms of tangible time. For example, suddenly a month had passed on the same page as the month before without any inclination. This made it hard to really feel out the characters and also to build tension needed in a thriller. In an October 29, 2012 article entitled "Ever Scarier: On 'The Turn of the Screw' " in The New Yorker magazine, Brad Leithauser wrote: "The language is extremely dense... and though the book runs only some hundred pages,... it feels longer than it is.". Can I get an Amen?!

رغم أنني ممن يخافون بسهولة، لم تبث فيّ هذه الرواية الرعب ولو للحظة، وأظن أن هذا يعني شيئاً. تبدأ الرواية كحال كلاسيكيات كثيرة، بمجموعة من الأشخاص اجتمعوا ليلة الكريسماس لتبادل القصص ويدّعي أحدهم بأن لديه أفضل قصة مرعبة، ويبدأ بإخبارهم بهذه القصة عن مربية تذهب لقصر بلاي للاعتناء بطفلين، والرعب الذي تواجهه هناك. ومن المفترض أن نخمن هل المنزل مسكون فعلا؟ هل الطفلان شريران؟ أم أن المربية مجنونة فحسب؟

كان أسلوب الكتابة مملا، وحتى بالنسبة إلى قارئة تحب الوصف مثلي، فكان هنا الوصف " English Review Below.

كان أسلوب الكتابة مملا، وحتى بالنسبة إلى قارئة تحب الوصف مثلي، فكان هنا الوصف "بلا هدف" في كثير من الأحيان. وفي أحيان كثيرة كنت أجدني غير واثقة إن كان يصف شبحا أو أحد الخدم حتى نهاية المشهد. كانت المواقف والأحداث تحدث دون تبرير أو مقدمات كافية والنهاية كانت مربكة ولم تثر فيّ الرعب. أعتقد أن النصف الأول من الرواية كان أفضل ولكن النصف الثاني كان هستيريا بكثير من الصراخ والميلودراماتيكية دون نهاية ترضيني حتى.

أعتقد أنه لو كان القراء يبحثون عن الرعب، فالمسلسل المقتبس عن الرواية على نتفليكس سيكون أفضل بكثير حتى وإن لم أشاهده، لكنه حتما سيكون أكثر رعبا من الرواية. أظن أن قراء الكلاسيكيات بمختلف أنواعها سيحبون هذه الرواية، ولكن لي ذوق معين في الكتاب الكلاسيكيين، وللأسف هنري جيمس ليس منهم.

I think it says something when someone who scares easily like me, doesn't even flinch when reading what's supposed to be a horror classic. The writing style made it hard for me to be scared or even feel a chill.

This story begins the way a lot of classics liked to begin, as a group of people staying together on Christmas and telling what I think are ghost stories, and someone comes forward and tells them he's got the best story, and he starts telling this story of a governess who goes to Bly manor to take care of two children and the "horrors" she encounters there. We're supposed to keep guessing is the house really haunted? are the children just wicked? or is the governess crazy and unreliable narrator? The writing style was boring, and even for someone who likes descriptions like me, I didn't like the way anything was described. A lot of the times, I didn't even realize he was talking about a ghost, not one of the maids or someone else. There was a lot of "convenient" situations and not enough explanations at all for all the words he used, and the ending was very confusing and the definition of anti-climactic. I think the only reason I'm not giving it 1 star, is that I liked some phrases and some descriptions.

I think if you want to be frightened, and even though I didn't watch it, I think the Netflix show is the way to go. Classics readers might still like this, but I've got a certain type of classic writing that I like, and this isn't it. ...more

Terjemahannya kaku, tapi versi asli bahasa inggrisnya juga susah untuk kemampuanku yang sangat terbatas ;___;
sebenarnya ceritanya bagus tapi karena kemampuan bahasa inggris yang kurang, jadi kurang memahami banyak bagian ceritanya.
