A prequel of sorts to my dog-eared, much-loved copy of Jane Eyre, Wide Sargasso Sea tells the story of Edward Rochester before he was the master of Thornfield Hall. Despite sharing characters and plot elements, however, the two books are nothing alike. Jane Eyre is a flowery, 19th-century bildungsroman set in England that deals with themes of morality, equality, and independence. I absolutely LOVED this book. If you liked Jane Eyre I think that you will too. I could have never imagined such an interesting prequel. It totally turns the original on its head and makes you question everything you thought you knew.
