I loved this book. Just when I think it's time to read a contemporary novel, I read a classic like this one, and I think "it just can't get any better than this!" This book read more like an autobiography than a novel. Crusoe's adventures leading up to his shipwreck on the desert island, and the years he spent building a life for himself there were just enthralling. At times this book was full of adventure and exploration with deeper forays into the human condition. At other times it was an exhaustive list of tasks and chores that felt dry. When Friday finally shows up the book takes on a renewed vibrancy that is the author's way of relating Crusoe's elation at having human contact once again, which was interesting to experience and was very enjoyable. ...more

The second in my chronological read of the McCrum list of 100 novels. Again I wish I could say 5 stars but lets call it a 4.7.... it was memorable, well worth reading and seminal, but not going to be 5 stars based on the company it will keep in the McCrum list.

5= Truly cream of the crop. Amazing. In a wondrous realm of their own
4= Special and well written. Truly a good/maybe great book, but not a rare 5 star wonder.

Never read this when I was younger but I am glad I did now. Exciting, dramatic, thoughtful, spiritual. An introspective look at a man's journey to spiritual maturity over 30 years.
