I’m not sure what I expected from this book, but whatever it was, this wasn’t it. It is about a group of children who are taken by pirates, so perhaps I thought it would be in the vein of Treasure Island. It is about the children and more or less from their viewpoint, so perhaps I thought it would be more juvenile or innocent. The Bas-Thornton kids have been running wild on their plantation in Jamaica. Then a hurricane rips their house away right over their heads. So their parents decided to send them to school in England. By looking at the cover I thought this book would be lighter than it was. (Judging a book by it's cover, serves me right.) The reviews also made it seem like it would be humorous.
