This book is fascinating and I wanted to be swept away, but despite some masterful insights and vivid descriptions, it lacked power. I found myself comparing Lispecter's writing to Virginia Woolf as I read. Woolf description are magical, you can smell and taste the ripe pear even though she only uses a few words to describe it, in the same way the reader is able to form a mental image of Mrs. Dalloway's green dress. I am not one for stream-of-consciousness writing. I really made an effort for this book but I didn’t enjoy it. So dark.
