Even in one of his early works Orwell can't help but impress. Though the story itself and its progression are fairly linear, Orwell shows his mastery of lambasting the mores and ideals of his day while also straddling the line (for both comedic and dramatic effect) between the double and even further on multiple meanings of words, laws, and people's interactions. To say I liked it is not quite true. Its Orwell, so nothing is going to turn out well. He must have been a very unhappy man. Not that he was wrong, but to live in a world where people "ain't no good," 100 percent of the time has got to be depressing. Trying, and failing, to find one character who was a decent human being. Perhaps the Doctor? Perhaps Flory's servant? They were the least flawed. Flo was definitely the only completely good creature in the book, and it did her no good.
