Winston Smith lebt in einer Welt, in der die Menschen ständig von Big Brother beobachtet werden, selbst in der eigenen Wohnung. Er hat aber das seltene Glück, einen toten Winkel in der Wohnung zu haben, der nicht eingesehen werden kann. Eines Tages beginnt er damit, ein Tagebuch zu führen, seine Gedanken zu ordnen und sein Leben und die Gesellschaft in der er lebt zu hinterfragen.

Die Geschichte lebt zunächst von den Beschreibungen der düsteren dystopischen Welt, was mir sehr gut gefallen hat, der Autor nimmt sich Zeit, um die ganze Weite der Auswirkungen des totalitären Staates auf den Einzelnen und die Gesellschaft als Ganzes zu beleuchten. Die Welt, die er erschafft, ist in ihrer Detailliertheit umso erschreckender.
Winston ist kein strahlender Held, er ist ein Produkt der Welt, in der er aufgewachsen ist und hat erschreckend dunkle Seiten. Meiner Meinung nach hätte es kaum einen passenderen Protagonisten geben können.
Das erste Drittel ist bedrückend, dann spitzen sich die Dinge zu, der Plot verdichtet sich, es gibt Momente des Lichts, aber der Leser ahnt ständig, dass Schlimmes bevorsteht, das letzte Drittel ist dann richtig harter Tobak, nicht nur die körperliche Folter, auch die psychologische Ebene, auf der Winston gefoltert wird, schnürt einem regelrecht die Luft ab. Zum Teil gingen mir die Folter-Szenen wirklich sehr an die Nieren, aber die Folter der Seele und des Geistes fand ich noch erschreckender.
Das Ende ist dann sehr passend gewählt. Das Buch wird sicher noch sehr lange in meinem Kopf „weiterarbeiten“.

Winston Smith lives in a world, in which people are permanently watched by Big Brother, even in the own flat. But he has the rare luck to have a blind angle in his flat, which can't be seen. One day he starts to write a diary, to sort his thoughts and to question his life and the society he lives in.
He meets a young woman and his attention is drawn to a rebel group, but the net, which Big Brother is casting around the individual, is holding him in a tight grip.

The story feeds mostly from the descriptions of the dark dystopian world, which I liked a lot, the author takes his time, to shine a light on the whole width of the effects of the totalitarian state onto the individual and the society as a whole. The world he builds is even more shocking in all its details this way.
Winston is no shining hero, he is a product of the world he grew up in and he has shockingly dark sides. In my opinion there couldn't have been a mor fitting protagonist to this story.
The first third is dismal and depressing, then the plot thickens, there are moments of light, but the reader is constantly sensing that bad things lie ahead. The final third is really tough shit, not only the physical torture, but also the psychological level on which Winston is tortured, is choking. The torture scenes hada strong impact on me, but the torture of the sould and mind were even more haunting.
The ending was very fittingly chosen, The book will continue to „work“ in my head for quite some time. ...more

Brilliant novel! meanwhile I really don't agree how it ended, It could be a full of contradicted emotions of intimidation, self cheapness and unworthiness that could drive Winston unhelplessly towards doing and pretending of doing what the party wants him to do or be but would never be a sudden believing yet loving the party/ big brother especially after the fact of knowing that the object of torture is torture & power is not a mean it's an end.
