There is something between me and the Victorian novels that can be called love. This is my first Collins' book and I hope that there are going to be many more. The plot, the characters - the villains in particular - the description of the country.....it was like watching a long fascinating movie with twists and drama. Wonderful.

Not a very good book, it's okay, there was one or two moments where the book comes to life, but primarily it's six hundred pages of extremely boring chit-chat. I love Dickens, so I had high hopes for his contemporaries, alas. Reading this snooze fest makes me appreciate Charles all the more. ...more

Shelves: classics, suspense

The first half was suspenseful and the second half dragged a bit. I thought resolution would come faster after the dastardly deed was done, but it was a lot of waiting.

Also, Marian is one of the best heroines ever. I don't know why Walter went for Laura over her... ...more
