Victorian novels are a good choice to get one's mind off the news. This particular novel was both suspenseful and slow moving, almost an oxymoron. Told by a variety of narrators, all of whom contribute to the telling of the story of the title character, the mystery is meant to seem "legitimate." Stretches of the novel are excellent; other stretches try the patience. Overall, I'd been meaning to read this for a long time, and I'm glad I did. Now on to Dickens and Trollope. ...more
