This is a novel by Boris Pasternak, first published in 1957 in Italy. The novel is named after its protagonist, Yuri Zhivago, a physician and poet, and takes place between the Russian Revolution of 1905 and World War II.
I loved this book. It was a slow read for me, not a perfect novel and I sometimes wondered whether the problems I had were more to do with translation (even though this is the brand new and masterful attempt making this novel available to those of us who sadly do not speak Russian). But I cannot believe that there is any better attempt than Pasternak's to bring to light the huge scope of the Russian Revolution and its effect on its people.
